A plain-language guide to Udyam registration
What Udyam registration is
Udyam is the government's registration for micro, small and medium enterprises. It replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar system. Registration is online, paperless and based on your Aadhaar and PAN, and the certificate does not need renewing.
How your category is decided
Your business is classified as micro, small or medium based on two things together: investment in plant, machinery or equipment, and annual turnover. The figures are pulled partly from your PAN and GST records, so what you enter should agree with your returns. The limits have been revised over the years, so we check the current ones with you.
Picking NIC codes that describe your work
The National Industrial Classification code tells the system what your business does. Many people choose a broad code in a hurry and later find it doesn't match their bank loan or tender application. We look for the codes that describe what you actually sell or make.
Why businesses register
Common reasons include applying for collateral-free or priority-sector loans, protection against delayed payments from buyers under the MSMED Act, and eligibility for certain government tenders and state schemes. Benefits vary, and we will tell you plainly which ones are realistic for you.
Updating your certificate
If your turnover, investment, address or activities change, the certificate should be updated. Category changes are also applied automatically from your returns, so keeping your records clean matters.
